The internationally known Blackwater Worldwide, formerly known as Blackwater USA, has plans to move its training site to a building located in Siempre Viva Road. The building has an area of 61,600 square feet which will be able to house the facilities meant to train law enforcers, military men and the companies own recruits.Erik Prince and Al Clark, who both served as Navy Seals, founded the company in 1997. Blackwater offers several services that are mostly of the defensive, protective and training nature. They offer services to both private companies and individuals. However the company became visible to the worlds eye because of its participation in contracts and missions for the US Government.Blackwater has been involved in several military missions overseas. The US Government has three main contractors that handle some of its military defensive and offensive projects and Blackwater is the largest of them all. Despite its large facilities and numerous employees, Blackwater also has its own stable of 744 U.S. contractors and 243 foreign ones. Blackwaters most recently noted contracts for the government include handling projects during the movements to Afghanistan, the Iraqi War and assistance following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The company also caters to petrochemical, insurance and communications companies.Most of its original missions were to serve as security detail for diplomats and other special visitors to Afghanistan and Iraq while conflict with the USA was going on. The company protected American and Iraq officials from insurgents, and also trained the recently rebuilt Iraqi army after the US military toppled the previous government. In March 2004, Iraqi rebels ambushed four Blackwater employers as they were delivering food. The four were attacked with various high-power weapons. Their dead bodies were displayed on a bridge across the Euphrates. This was one of the attacks on US private contractors that led to the attack on Fallujah. Based in Moyock, North Virginia, the company was named for the color of the water in a swamp near their 6,000 acre facility. Restaurants and other food service businesses generate literally tons of cooking oil, grease and food wastes every day. If this waste is not managed properly, it can cause major environmental problems. Much of the waste is in solid form and can be safely put in packages and placed in the trash. Liquid waste containing oil and grease dumped directly into the sewer, however, can block the system and cause wastewater to flow back-up .To avoid this you have to install and properly maintain a grease trap.Grease traps capture the oil and grease from the flow of wastewater by slowing down the flow of hot greasy water through the grease trap (actually a tank) and allowing it to cool. As it cools, the grease and oil separate out of the water and float to the top of the trap. The cooler water continues to flow down the drain pipe to the sewer while baffles prevent the accumulated grease and oil from flowing out of the grease trap. The size of the grease trap depends largely on how much waste your business produces and how often you perform trap maintenance. Grease traps may be located inside or outside of the building. Traps that are located inside the building tend to be smaller and require more frequent maintenance. Traps that are located outside the building tend to be larger and may be less disruptive to maintain. Today, there are situations when we actually add a middle person instead of eliminating one for increased service efficiency. If its cost-effective and demand is high, then proper market positioning will make it a worthwhile endeavor. There are electrical suppliers that no longer manufacture the product of electricity, but now are involved only in the delivery process of electricity to the customers. Because of market fluctuations, the new delivery supplier will utilize many other different energy suppliers to get the product of electricity to the customer efficiently and at the best market price. Again, adding the middle man seems to benefit all around. In relating this theory to restaurants, it is the food runner that has become popular, especially in the larger dining establishments that rarely existed years ago. Food runners are employees who only work the rush hours of the dining room- only running food back and forth from the kitchen to the tables with light dining room table interaction (condiments, fresh pepper etc.). It is a 2-4 hr. shift, depending on how long the dining rush lasts. Before large restaurants existed, the waiter would complete the process of order taking and delivering of the food. Today, the food runner can be implemented (additional middle man) relieving the waiter of this time consuming and sometimes painstaking process. The waiter must share a percentage of his tip with the runner, but in return his job is eased because the food is delivered for him- allowing extra time to work more tables and up sell to customers thereby increasing sales. Though, it does remain the waiters responsibility to check the table for additional diner needs-- either while the food is being placed by the runner or shortly thereafter. The tip-out to the runner is usually 10-15% depending on the service system, but well worth it if waiter sales can increase by 20-30 %. The main point is the food runner addition improves delivery service efficiency while being cost-effective (if the sales increase outweighs the payroll increase). Properly integrating employees into the dining room with exact middle man connections always makes for smooth service flow. Its not a matter of just blindly throwing extra employees at a service problem, but organizing the best system possible with the minimal amount of labor. Adding the middle man can sometimes streamline operations in such way that it becomes irresistible and impossible to ignore. Why do we use experts? To predict the future. Consider a patient who is asking a physician about the future effects of a certain drug, or the investor who is asking a stock analyst about the future prices of a certain stock, or the manager who is asking a human resource manager about the future performance of a certain candidate, or the brand manager who is asking a market researcher about the future sales of a certain new product. Should we believe these experts? History tells us that accurate predictions of the future are rare. Many examples exist where the brightest and most qualified individuals failed to see the future. This series of articles presents examples from the arts (see part I), business (see part II), and science (see part III).Should we believe the experts in the arts? D. W. Griffith is regarded by many as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. More than anyone of the silent era, he recognized the potential of movies as an expressive medium. During that time, his achievements were momentous. In 1915 he finished the feature Birth of a Nation, regarded as the first masterpiece of cinema. In 1919 he finished the movie Intolerance (1919), which marked a new standard in filmmaking. His next two movies, Broken Blossoms (1919) and Way Down East (1920), sealed his reputation as Americas preeminent director. According to James Agee, "To watch his work is like being a witness to the beginning of melody, or the first conscious use of the lever or the wheel; the emergence, coordination, and first eloquence of language; the birth of an art: and to realize that this is all the work of one man." The great silent movie actor Lillian Gish called him "the father of film" and Charlie Chaplin called him "the teacher of us all." During the same time, D. W. Griffith also exhibited superb business instincts by founding the United Artist production company together with Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and Mary Pickford, the three greatest performers of the day.However, from the mid to late 1920s things began to change. His intuitive powers started to wane. In 1924, at the age of 49, Griffith wrote in an article published by the Saturday Evening Post, We do not want now and we shall never want the human voice with our films. Only three years later, in 1927 the first talking movie, The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson was released. The reaction of the public to the movie was astounding. The picture was a sellout, one of the big box office hits of all time. In October 1930, the Fortune magazine wrote, "The advent of American talking movies is beyond comparison the fastest and most amazing revolution the whole history of industrial revolutions." Griffiths failed prediction was only an early sign of his now chronic misguided intuition. From the late 1920s, Griffith's movies were slowly sinking into oblivion. In the glitter of the Jazz Age, his filmmaking was considered hopelessly old-fashioned. His last picture, The Struggle, was made in 1931 and played in theaters for merely a week before being withdrawn. On July 23, 1948, Griffith died in a small Los Angeles hotel virtually forgotten by the industry he helped build.What was the cause of Griffiths transition from great intuition to misguided intuition? One of the most common causes of misguided intuition, and therefore, the limited success of experts in predicting the future, is the situation bias. Experts, like all humans, tend to imagine future technologies as an extension of current technologies. The bias grows stronger when the individual has a vested interest in the current technology and is concerned that the new technology will diminish the popularity of his or her prized, older technology. Griffith was a master of the silent movie. His skill in eliciting powerful reactions from the audience without resorting to spoken dialogue was legendary. This unique skill was the reason for his downfall. It distorted his intuition and prevented him from foreseeing the potential of the human voice in movies.How is this example related to qualitative research? The situation bias is especially strong in manual interpretation of qualitative data. During such interpretation, the analyst shows a strong tendency to look for the familiar.
